Laboratories in Network is a research project for the innovation and amelioration of scientific education with the aid of new technologies.

About ten classes of Middle School from different Italian towns linked by computers and modem are exchanging communications among them and with some researchers in physics and biology of the University of Milan.

Actors are the students themselves who are exchanging messages concerning their work in science centred on a natural environment .

After a period of qualitative observations the students gradually shifted to a more quantitative phase consisting in performing measurements of some variables and exchanging data through the network building a common data-base.

The single classes have studied in greater detail some topics in physics and biology using specific instruments and intensifying exchanges through the network. This sperimentation was planned for a 3- years span and started with school year 1993-94. Last year a similar project (Laboratories in Network 2) promoted by IRRSAE Lombardia (Regional Institute for Educational Research, Experimentation in teaching and teachers’ training) was also started. This project is aimed at extending this proposal to other schools in the Lombard area interested in the introduction of telecommunication in education.

On April 29 1996 the pupils of Laboratories in Network met at the IRRSAE Lombardia and presented the most significative aspects of their work of the present year then opening up to others their communication class.
